I have a serious issue and I need some help on this, so any advice would be much appreciated. For the past week or so, I have had absolutely no desire to eat anything. I think it's a combination of complete food aversion and nausea. It's gotten so bad that I actually have to force myself to eat. Literally, I have to tell my hand to pick up the food, put it in my mouth, chew, and swallow. If I'm lucky I'll get down half a peanut butter and jelly sandwich for lunch and then some jook (waterey cooked rice stew type of thing) for dinner.
Doc started to freak out last night when all I could eat for dinner was half of an egg roll and 3" of a Subway sandwich. I wasn't actually concerned until he started to get concerned because #1, I'm not constantly throwing up (maybe because I'm not eating anything?) and #2, all my concentration for the past 2 weeks or so has been on just making it through the day. Oh, and I've tried all the non-prescription remedies: ginger, B6, sea-sickness wrist bands, saltines, small meals, etc.
I told Doc not to worry because there were women that are far worse than me, but that didn't seem to console him and now he's got me all worried. I have an email out to my OB, but I also wanted to post the question to you. Is this normal? Have you experienced this, too? Should I be concerned?

Hi Sooz - of course I haven't experienced this yet:) but I am a dietitian and I think it is normal to have low appetite in your first trimester. I would be more worried if you have nausea and vomiting. As long as you are tolerating your prenatal vitamins and are staying hydrated, you do not have consume a whole lot of extra calories in the first trimester. Hopefully, you'll feel better soon!
Very similar to my experience. From week 6 to week 10 or so, I could barely eat and was probably only getting in around 1200 calories a day, for all the reasons you mention. (Also not vomiting.) None of the non-medication remedies helped me either.
My OB was not terribly concerned when I lost 7-8 lbs in a month. (Though she did prescribe Zofran to help the nausea.)
I would echo what TurtleMama said about staying hydrated (at least 2 liters of water a day) and taking your prenatal vitamins. Unless you were underweight to begin with, there probably isn't cause for concern because the baby will take what s/he needs--which isn't a lot, at this early stage--from your body.
Completely normal. I was same way and I'm one of those ppl who has huge appetite and must always eat exactly what I'm craving or else I turn into a nasty bitch. But then I got pregnant and food became a non interest. I ended up eating whatever carb I thought I could swallow down my throat 2-3xs a day. Anything other than a carb wasn't going down, I rarely puked the first tri but had an awful gagging problem. Nausea completely disappeared around week 8-9 for me. I also would come home at 6pm andsleep. Wake up for half an hour when dhcame home and fall asleep again. Was a narcoleptic. Dunno how i stayed upright in my seat at work bc nausea so badand bc i was so tired. Nothing worked for me tho i sycked on ginger candy till the cows came home. Hang in there and NO worries. Xoxo.
I don't have any experience with this so, unfortunately, I don't have any words of wisdom - I had zero nausea when I was pregnant. I sure hope you get feeling better soon though
I recommend making protein shakes! I use a protein powder made from pea, but a whey protein would work too. I put in an extra scoop (protein is important!), add in extra fiber, chia seeds (for the Omega-3, protein and fiber), 1 cup water, plus a cup of frozen berries and half a banana.
Blend and enjoy! Easy to drink and you get the nutrients AND extra liquid in your day.
I am like Jen - no sickness, but I think it's totally normal. Jem's reco of a shake is a good idea. I drank them religiously. My recipe was: fruit juice, yogurt, frozen fruit, fresh veggies (carrot and maybe some greens), flaxseed oil, egg whites, tofu, scoop of protein powder. I just downed it.
